Shuman The Rabbit Haven Annmarie and Ashley Curly Sue

Welcome to The Rabbit Haven, a community of and for rabbits and their guardians, serving the Bay Area since 1987.

The Rabbit Haven rescues injured and abandoned rabbits and accepts surrendered rabbits from the general public or the SPCA in Santa Cruz, Santa Clara, San Benito and Monterey Counties.  We then work to place these rescued rabbits into loving permanent or foster homes. The Rabbit Haven also works in the community, at schools, and with our local SPCA shelter and other education groups to educate the public on rabbit care, feeding, grooming, medical needs, social requirements and behaviors.

Jossalin

Jossalin

Our lovely Jossalin came to The Haven in mid November 2007 with a horrific injury to her back right leg. Her foot was completely gone and the stump was dead with the bone sticking out. After she was stable and gained some weight, Jossalin's leg was amputated at the mid thigh. Dr. Carolynn Harvey of Chabot Vet Hospital in Hayward took excellent care of our girl and treated her like a queen. Jossalin came through the surgery with flying colors. After her recovery, physical therapy and lots of TLC she is now ready to find her forever home.

PetCo to Stop Selling Rabbits

We are pleased to announce that Petco has chosen to stop the sale of rabbits in their stores and to focus on in store adoptions working with shelters and a variety of noon profit animals rescue groups. Adoption First is their new motto. We applaud Petco for their compassionate choice! Hopefully this choice will continue to expand to include all other animals that may be sold in their stores.

Here is the report: Monday, November 17, 2008

PETCO Moves to Adoption-Only for Rabbits reported from petco news.

PETCO is expanding adoptions of rabbits in all of our stores nationwide!

The company states "As part of our commitment to saving more animal lives, we're phasing out the sale of rabbits in stores where we now sell them, and reaching out to rabbit adoption groups to join with us in finding forever homes for more rabbits in those stores and all of our stores across the country. We're looking forward to expanding our existing relationships with the many adoption groups we're already working with, and pleased to offer this important opportunity to rabbit rescue groups nationwide".

This news came direct from Marcie Whichard, Vice President of Animal Care & Education-PETco, San Diego What great news - another large pet store decided to stop the sale of rabbits! Not only this but they also recognize that rescue groups are critical to saving animals loves and now are partnering with many new groups! Great news for rabbits and the world! binkies to all.

Two Victories for Animals on Election Day

Tuesday was an historic day in America in more ways than one. With resounding victories for California’s Prop 2 and Massachusetts’s Ballot Question 3, voters on both coasts sent a clear message that preventing animal cruelty is a national priority.

In California, the factory farm-related Standards for Confining Farm Animals Act (ballot Proposition 2) won in a landslide, with over 60 percent of respondents voting “yes” to mandate an increase of confinement space for veal calves, breeding pigs and egg-laying hens. On the Act’s effective date, January 1, 2015, these animals will have their rights to turn around, lie down, stand up and fully extend their limbs guaranteed by state law. Violators will face a fine up to $1,000 or six months in county jail. Photo curtesy of ASPCA The Massachusetts ban on dog racing has been a long time coming—in 2000, a similar ballot measure was narrowly defeated, and attempts to get the question included on the 2006 ballot were unsuccessful. With the ban’s passage this week (57 percent to 43 percent), commercial dog racing will be phased out in Massachusetts by 2010. There are two dog tracks in the state—each of which is believed to currently house about 1,000 greyhounds. Because the phase-out will occur over a period of 14 months, greyhound advocacy groups such as Grey2K USA are confident that they will be able to find homes for any racing dogs who become available for adoption.
