Update: March 31, 2011
Several of the Beach bunnies have now been adopted and the rest are settled in foster homes. Rhonda and her six kits, in care with Vicki are just having a great time.
They are happy, healthy, and having fun. Here is what vicki their foster mom says:
"Rhonda and babies are doing great! They are all very healthy and eating up a storm. Mom is eating all the time. I'm surprised she's only gained 1/4 lb. in 3 weeks.
She has a bare spot on her back that I think is from the urine scald she had there. She likes to be held and LOVES her lettuce. The babies are so adorable,
running all over the place. I sit with them on the couch & they explore every nook and cranny. Eventually they get tired and all fall asleep on my lap, all leaning against each other.
So lovable."
Eventually this group of bunnies will be avail through HRS.
Georgia is happy in foster care with The Haven and is available for adoption now.
Update: March 24, 2011
Rhonda continues to improve every day - and take a look at her sweet litter. The babies are still at a special infant foster care with The Haven.
The kits are so beautiful, calm and healthy! Just stunning tiny babies. Rhonda is looking very good now. She is starting to gain weight and is learning it is ok to be curious
and explore. In about eight weeks they will go off to HRS (www.rabbit.org) and Rhonda will be spayed - what a terrific rescue!

Update: March 4, 2011
Rescued beach bunny Rhonda and her babies were rescued by the House Rabbit Society and are being fostered at a special Haven foster site for newborns. They arrived safely today and mom and the babies are doing well.
A big thanks to transport coordinators and Arneil and Deborah for bringing them to the nursery site. The transport went very well with clear weather and little traffic.
The babies arrived all snuggled up and warm. Two are very fat and three are sort of fat so that's wonderful.
Here is a report from our newborn foster site:
When I pick them up, they seem much more active than other babies I have had. And strong too. I try to examine them but their little arms are so strong it's hard for me to move them away. They seem to be settling in well and are strong.
Three babies are solid color: brown/gray. Two are like mom: white with brown spots on the face, eyes, ears and back.
Mom is a little thin but not bad. She needs her nails trimmed and has a bit of matted fur but not bad for a feral bunny. Mom's breathing is noisy. She's a light eater ... just nibbling the pellets. But when I brought her some lettuce, she literally jumped up and grabbed it out of my hands before I could put it down. Whoa! Later I saw her nursing her babies. That's always wonderful to see after her big trip.
She "dug" all of her pellets out of her bowl & had them all pushed into a corner along with all of her toys. That combined with the very active babies ... I'm glad I have a kitchen they can play in when they get bigger. Could be quite a handful.

Last week, East Bay Parks rangers rounded up 19 rabbits along the Hayward shoreline and took them into a local shelter. The shelter has room for only 4 rabbits (and they already had two), so rescuers went into immediate action to try to find places for these bunnies before the shelter was forced to start euthanizing them. The Haven took in several rabbits and one of of foster sites is caring for a mother with a litter of newborns.
Thanks to everyone who offered to help. We got responses from as far away as Arizona and New York! Rabbits rescued from the beach were taken in by The Rabbit Haven, Harvest Home,
Leaps and Bounds, Bananas for Bunnies, Animal Friends Rescue Project, SaveABunny and The House Rabbit Society. Thirteen bunnies went out today for spay surgery (expenses covered by the Rabbit Haven) and then to foster homes. Rhonda and her babies (she gave birth Monday) are going directly into foster at a Haven nursery foster site after being rescued by The House Rabbit Society. Special thanks to the great coordination efforts of Anne Martin, Elizabeth Berg (House Rabbit Society) and Karen Courtemanche (Harvest Home) and the amazing staff at Four Paws spay/neuter clinic.
This rescue was quite an accomplishment given the terribly limited time frame – 48 hours to get them out. Kudos to the Bay area rescue coordinators
We could still use a few more long-term fosters, but it looks like we will make it through the crisis.
