Left to Die - Tiny Injured Litter Discovered in a Box
Update: September 1, 2011
We are saddened to let you know that our littlest patient, Agahi, did not survive. She was doing so much better every day. She was healing, she learned how to groom on her back. She loved her care and her milk and her foster mom Selah. Then suddenly she became Very ill. Selah tried everything to help her but she fell into a deep sleep and then she was gone. We at The Haven miss her but will continue to focus on rehabilitating her littermates and finding homes for them.
Notes to those who love me. No matter where you go, I will be with you for I have left a part of my spirit with you. As you go through each day, I am with you. You will not forget my gentle ways, the way I held my head the way I lived my life with you. I remember you too… How you cared for me and loved me and helped me Gently caring for me so that all my injuries were bathed in gentle, peaceful affection. I carry this with me and it gives me so much joy. to be so loved...I could not have asked for more. You can still see me, did you know? I am right there with you. I am small and white and happy You can feel my tiny feet upon your hand and sense me resting near you My soft white fur about you When you remember me, I will be right there. Hold me in your heart as I play in the land of rainbows Remember, I will always be with you. Love, Shining sun - AgahiUpdate: August 26, 2011 Agahi is battling for her life today. ![]() The front office person raced the babies into the back to see the vet. When she returned to the front, the boy was gone. So the clinic, who did not have a rabbit vet was left with a litter of injured babies without any staff to care for them. The vet tech was a very kind person and the vet on call did his best to clean their wounds and even lanced one of the severe wounds on the littlest baby. However, that was all that they could do. They knew that the kits needed to be fed so they began calling for help. The local shelter would not able to care for the babies and suggested the clinic call rescues. So they did. They called and called, then they finally reached us at The Rabbit Haven. ![]() Happily our infant caregiver had an opening and she was located very close to the clinic. After quick coordination with the vet's office, she was on her way over to pick the babies up. When she had the babies and could examine them she was alarmed to discover the severity of the injuries, especially to the tiny baby. There appeared to be three babies in the box. The litter looked to be 2-3 weeks old and all had injuries - One, the tiniest kit , was only 4 ozs and had severe bite wounds to her face, abdomen, front leg and back leg. She also had heavy black bruising from her chest down her abdomen. Our caregiver was not certain that the baby could survive, but the baby seemed to have a very strong will to live. She was eager to eat, happily accepted our care. Even with all her injuries she was still fighting. Her siblings had a variety of injuries too and thankfully, they were much easier to treat. They had bite wounds to their face, mouth and extremities, however, their injuries did not appear to be deep, infected or abscessed. They needed formula, antibiotics and wound cleaning to stabilize them and then they looked pretty good. Our caregiver then focused on her smallest patient. This little baby needed intense care to be able to survive. So she focused her primarily care on the baby who she named Agahi. Agahi let us know right away that she was very interested in living! She was eager to drink her warm formula and seemed to respond quickly to handling and her treatment. She was so calm, and affectionate. She even fell asleep while her wounds were being tended. Even given all the trauma she has suffered, and the great pain she had to be feeling she still gave little kisses as her foster mom fed her. She began making a powerful connection with her foster mom. Naturally she was placed on antibiotics, pain medications and her treatment was started that night. Agahi's foster mom worked at relieving her huge abscesses one by one, very gently. As the pressure was reduced the baby appeared to feel better and was able to move more freely. Agahi had significant, traumatic injures. Her foster mom had to work slowly, carefully and methodically to access and then manage each of the wound areas. The abscesses and very deep. We knew if she was to recover that her medical process would be long and tenuous. Yet, she worked so hard to eat, to move about and even found a comfy way to sleep on her back. She is the first one in the litter to eat, the first to sleep and she can groom herself too. ![]() As soon as we could get her in Agahi saw Dr. Carolynn Harvey who noted that her wounds were extreme and that her front leg and back ankle joints had been compromised. Both have fractures. Dr. Harvey hopes that as Agahi grows the bones will fuse, making the joints functional. She is young enough that this is possible. Dr. Harvey instructed the caregiver to see that the abscesses are slowly flushed, drained, and that Agahi continues to eat, receive antibiotics, pain medications and hot packs. Although her prognosis is guarded it is quite possible this little baby bunny can make it! With Dr. Harvey's and the caregiver's support, she has a good chance. We are certainly willing to help her. Dr. Harvey documented injuries to the genital areas, her face, front right leg, back left hock, ankle and leg. She also noted a crush injury to Agahi's chest and abdomen. The injuries are traumatic, yet Dr. Harvey said it is possible that she can overcome these injuries. Agahi will need many hours of vet tech care, vet exams, x rays and rehabilitation to see her through, We are happy to help her and major kudos to her caregiver for her technical skills, love and support of this sweet baby. We will keep everyone posted on her progress. She is such a gentle loving bunny. Her siblings know she is in need and they groom her. She also tries to groom them back. She also gives her foster mother little kisses. Help this little sweetheart by contributing to her care and send her plenty of healing energy please. We have received our first donation to care for Agahi- $200! That went to cover her first Vet bill. Pleas help us help Agahi and her siblings survive.
