The great February guinea pig transport is ready to begin
February 6, 2008
The garage at the Haven storage site looked like a warehouse with all the donated items for the pigs. Litter, food, hay, water bottles, bedding and lots of carriers! At least 20 of the carriers were brand new. Many people helped us to get this done including Anita, Pet Food Express, private donors who contributed supplies and cash, Humane Society of Silicon Valley, Sue from Cavy House and our own sweet Sioux, who is the main transport person. Thank you to our transport people who picked up and delivered donations too!

February 9th will mark one of our biggest guinea pig transports ever. We will be transporting approximately 45-50 guinea pigs to other quality rescue sites. This is an incredible story of successful collaboration of five rescues to save the lives of 71 guinea pigs. We are being helped with this rescue by Wee Companions, Orange County Cavy Haven, Bakersfield Pig Rescue, Piggy Poo, Northstar Small Animal Rescue, Harvest Home and Rabbit Ears. Working together we can save the lives of so many sweet little ones. This is a large collaborative effort involving five guinea pigs rescue groups. Transport details are being finalized now. Cavy House took the brunt of the initial costs of this rescue, providing immediate veterinary and foster care for all of the piggies. We will still have many left, mostly moms who are ill or those who are too close to term to make a trip. We are trying to raise another $500.00 to fund the ongoing care costs for the pigs at Cavy house.

Honorable mention goes to Lara W (in Watsonville), Heather & Paul of Santa Cruz and other kind people who took in fosters who needed special care a few weeks ago. We needed to move out existing guinea pigs to make room for the incoming ones that needed such a high level of care. Thanks to our vets who saw large groups of guinea pigs to offer medical consultation and diagnose and treat any problem. Cavy House became a mini medical ward for the past few weeks. Sue, Barbara and her team watched over them constantly and ran to the vet often. 71 guinea pigs on top of our existing number was quite an effort and took many foster set ups and loads of extra energy to manage. The guinea pigs all had adequate, clean accommodations while they recovered from their terrible ordeal. Now they are all safe. They are recovering with the kindness and love they receive at Cavy house.

This is an incredible rescue and relocation for a group of 71 pigs. There are many pregnant females and moms with pups. We have triaged so the ones that are still sick will stay with us and the rest can go on to find happy permanent homes. This rescue has kept us all very busy since we received them. With all of the donations that have come in, we now have enough food and carriers for the trip. The Haven will cover transport costs and medical costs for Sue, and The Rabbit Haven will continue fundraising to help defray these costs.

Sadly, We did lose three of these pigs. One tiny pup to a crush injury and two to stress related issues - It was a terrible dump of 63 pigs in one crate! Sue came the moment she was called dropping work and anything else - She is simply amazing. Sue deserves a medal for this wonderful work! She has been a constant stable and talented force with Cavy House since it's inception. She is all volunteer and all heart!

Blessing to our colleges at Wee companions, Orange County Cavy Haven, Bakersfield Pig Rescue, & Piggie Poo too. And our great supporters who responded to our web postings.
