Neville and Zeke - Two Special Bunnies Need Your Help
Update: June 6, 2011
Neville, the sweet brown bunny with an eye injury had his follow up appointment with Dr. Harvey. Sadly, after weeks of battling to save his eye with antibiotic treatments, he is much worse and his eye will need to be removed for his health and well being. His eye is now painful and the abscess is effecting his quality of life.

The surgery and follow up treatments will most likely cost around $1,000 including the medications and procedures (even with our discount). As always, The Haven is comitted to getting Neville what ever treatments he needs regardless of the expense. His surgery is scheduled for Friday June 17.

If you want to help Neville have his surgery you can donate by check or online via our PayPal account. Please indicate that your donation is for Neville.

Update: May 15, 2011

Zeke had his enucleation (eye removal) surgery on Friday May 13, to remove his painful and badly infected right eye. The surgery was performed by Dr. Carolynn Harvey DVM at Chabot Veterinary Clinic. Dr. Harvey performed the operation at a steep discount to her normal rates for us, and we are very grateful to her for her continued support of The Haven and our bunnies. Zeke had to spend a night at the hospital so that the doctor could check on him first thing in the morning. He made it through the surgery and his recovery went very well. We think the cost of the procedure will now top $1200 given the expense of the overnight stay.

Dr. Harvey has prescribed pain medications and antibiotics to help Zeke heal. He tested positive for exposure to the E. cuniculi parasite, so once he has recovered fully from his surgery he will begin treatment for E.C. as well. A biopsy will be done on the eye tissue to determine what caused the abscess, and if any further treatment will be necessary.

Zeke is back home now with his foster family. He is eating really well, and his incision is healing nicely. Zeke still has his friendly personality and enjoys snuggling and kissing his foster family. He will be on cage rest for a few more days, and then will be able to explore and play a little. We are hopeful that he will make a full recovery.

The Haven has already spent close to $1000 for Zeke's care, and we expect a few more bills to come in soon. We think he is worth it! He will get the best care we know how to give, from the best vets we know. If you wish to help financially, you can donate by check or online via our PayPal account. Please indicate that your donation is for Neville and Zeke.

Update: May 6, 2011
Neville and Zeke were examined by Dr. Harvey this week and both had their eye injuries evaluated. We continue to try to get the best care possible for these bunnies, regardless of the expense involved.

Zeke's prognosis is not good. His eye is completely destroyed and is causing him pain. The eye will be surgically removed on May 13 to stop the spread of the abscess and to improve his quality of life. Dr. Harvey also noted the possible presence of a coccidia infection, so Zeke has begun treatment for that as well. He is currently getting metacam and eye drops for pain management, Panazuril for coccidia, and Baytril for treating any lingering infections. Dr. Harvey thinks that the abscess in Zeke's eye may be due to an E. cuniculi infection, so he will have a blood titer and a biopsy of the abscess to determine the best treatment options post surgery. Zeke's treatment, including surgery, biopsy, office visits, blood work and medications is expected to cost over $1000. Dr. Harvey has given us generous discounts on the treatment, without her generosity the expenses would be much higher. The Haven will do whatever we can to make sure that he is well cared for, regardless of the expenses involved. Our goal, as always, is to get him healthy, so he can be adopted into a happy home of his own.

Dr. Harvey thinks we have a chance to save Neville's eye through the use of antibiotics to treat the infection that is causing the abscess. He will be given a three week course of antibiotics and will be evaluated again after that period of time. The office visits and medications for this treatment are expected to cost The Haven around $400. If, after this time, the abscess is not considerably better, Neville will have to undergo the same surgical treatment that Zeke is getting. If Neville does need to have eye removal surgery, he will require at least another $1000 in veterinary expenses.

The Haven is committed to providing whatever care these two bunnies require to get them healthy and into their own forever homes. We are asking for your financial help to allow us to pay the large medical bills they are both accumulating. If you wish to help, you can donate by check or online via our PayPal account. Please indicate that your donation is for Neville and Zeke.

Neville Zeke

Neville was abandoned at a local feed store and Zeke was dumped at a shelter. These rabbits are exceptionally friendly and loving bunnies who came in with eye injuries that require comprehensive care. Both now have serious eye abscesses that are being treated by costly medical procedures.

Neville and Zeke have serious eye conditions that may cost them their sight or their lives. They have both been seen by top notch bunny vets who have done all they can to help them over the past two months. They have been treated to correct the situation and sadly the condition of both rabbits has deteriorated. At this point in time they are in need even more specialized care to save their eyesight and possibly their lives. They must see an ophthalmologist and have the testing needed to find out the cause of their eye conditions and to determine the needs for each rabbit. We will do all we can to save their eye sight and to save their lives.

The possibilities for future procedures include eye surgery, further treatment and possibly eye enucleation. These sweethearts need your support to make it through the next two months of care. Can you help Neville and Zeke? Their care will be costly, at least $500 per bunny. They have appoinments scheduled this week to see a surgeon to determine if their eyes can be saved, or will have to be removed. We are asking for your financial help to pay for the growing vet bills these two bunnies are accumulating. So if you can help Neville and Zeke please send your donations by check or via our PayPal account. Please indicate that your donation is for Neville and Zeke.

Thank you for your support of these precious rabbits. We will keep you up to date as we progress through the course of care.
