Three New Litters Rescued by The Rabbit Haven
The Rabbit Haven rescued three litters of adorable babies during the months of September and October of 2007.
These babies and moms were in imminent danger at high kill shelters, so The Haven rescued all of them. This
influx of new rabbits is seriously taxing our resources. If you can be a foster family for a baby or a
litter, or can sponsor one of these precious babies, it would help tremendously.
Consider the joy of fostering a special family (it is an 8 week commitment). You can foster a single baby and help to syringe feed and provide the care needed by these sweet baby bunnies. If you cannot foster, you can sponsor a baby by donating to The Haven in the name of a special baby you may see on our web.. We will in turn send you pictures of the baby you are sponsoring. Your donation will help us provide the quality care these bunnies need. We need funds to pay for needed supplies, Kitten Milk Replacement formula, special enclosures for mothers and kits, and related items needed by tiny newborns. like medications, sub cutaneous fluids, and vet care. We have a great need for new foster sites as we are becoming overwhelmed and we do not want to have to turn away a baby in need. Anyone wishing to foster a mom and her litter, a single baby, or possibly an adult bunny (that would free up a space so another foster site can take in a mom and kits), Just call us. We can send you an application on the computer and have you set up in a day or two. 831 239-7119 or Email director@therabbithaven.org. Donations may be mailed to The Haven or via our PayPal account. Litter of Love
This tiny little family was born September 18, 2007. They were boxed up with two adult females and dumped at the
door of a South Bay shelter in the middle of the night. Unfortunately, their mother was not with them. One baby died before coming
to us. Weak from starvation, we lost another baby in a few days. The remaining four little ones have been through
hell. With no mommy to help start their little lives out on the right foot, they required days of subcutaneous fluids to
reverse their severely dehydrated state, medication for bacterial infections, treatments for mites and incubator style life in a
small kennel on a soft fleece pad on top of a heating pad to maintain their body temperature. They were too weak to even nurse
from a surrogate mommy so we syringe fed them around the clock till they regained enough strength to nurse from their
surrogate mom.
Survival for these little guys was touch and go. From one hour to the next you did know who might be the next one to "crash". These little bundles of life have never given up. They have had to fight long and hard and they are maintaining their temperatures and weight and have been upgraded to a small cage. They are eager to nurse from their surrogate mom and are supplemented between nursing via syringe with Kitten Milk Replacer (KMR). Although still under weight, their weight gain is steady and they are now looking like little fuzzy bunny babies. Supplemental baby foods and canned pumpkin are being introduced and tolerated well. They are attempting to nibble on alfalfa pellets, greens and the soft leaves of alfalfa hay. They are not completely out of the woods yet but have made such positive strides in the right direction. It was so heartbreaking to see them when they first arrived and to know this was such a senseless act of stupidity on the part of the person who left them in the box. But we fell the outcome will be great because these little babies are growing stronger every day and they are so loving, not to mention just too precious for words. These little guys will not be available for adoption for some time but they still need your love and support. Through your kind and generous donations we can continue to help this little family with formula, food and medications and vet care. Rayna and her Family
Rayna and her eight babies were dumped at a South Bay shelter at the end of September. The shelter
euthanizes newborns right away, so they called The Haven for immediate rescue. By the time we got them out of
the shelter an on their way to foster care, one of the kits had died. The seven surviving kits and their mom
Rayna are safe in a loving Haven foster home, getting care and socialization to prepare them for adoption.
Saddie and her Family
Saddie was rescued from a Monterey shelter moments before she and her babies were to be destroyed.
The shelter where Saddie was living is very crowded with bunnies, and mothers with newborns are not given
much time there. Determined Haven
transporters sped down to Monterey to get the precious family out before their time was up. Once the mom and
litter were taken from the shelter and brought back to the Bay Area, they were placed in a special foster home
where they are receiving all the love and care that they deserve.
This rescue was a coordinated effort that involved many different people, including shelter staff, a shelter rabbit advocate, transporters, Auntie Heather, foster care givers and people from the Animal Friends Rescue Project. There are many different ways to help rabbits in need. Please contact us if you want to find out more about the many ways to help. |
