Urgent Rescue Needed for Santa Cruz County Rabbits
April 10, 2011
Benny Lenny Bugsy Jenny Kiwi

Our shelters at Watsonville & in Santa Cruz are inundated with rabbits. Yesterday 13 rabbits were brought to the shelter in Watsonville! Note: this shelter was already full – Then today a mother with 7 kits!!! And this is BEFORE Easter. Supposedly these rabbits were “found” under a shed Thursday –Then there is one older male who has obviously been outside a long time and the five babies -One little red girl about 2 1/2 months old and the other four that are about 3 weeks. The Haven took in the kits and the older male - it is just a start. The large new numbers will impact the existing rabbits at the shelter. The shelter staff is barely able to keep up now. The 2.5 mo old girl needs rescue and KMR. So do the new pair of gray and white boys at the Santa Cruz Shelter. We are scrambling. On top of this tragic mess at one shelter 6 new rabbits also arrived in Santa Cruz shelter. The shelter was also already full. If you have any space opening at your rescue please call me – All our systems are overloaded now and we will be taking on yet another tomorrow – We moved out three rabbits from SC Thursday and four took their place by this afternoon. We will transport. The SC shelter sally port will not be able to be used again as there is such a staff shortage. The Haven is absolutely full – The shelters will not be able to care for the natural influx that is usually experienced due to Easter. Sadly the last two days of dumped rabbits puts many existing shelter rabbits in danger of euthanasia given space –rescue is needed. They will need out ASAP. Look at the photos to see if there are any you might have room for in your home or shelter. The shelter is being awesome but they really do not have the staff to care for this large number of animals.

The Haven took in 5 Thursday and moved out 3 from SC shelter to make room. We have scheduled three more intakes for Saturday already – we have to follow through. We are now extremely overfull – we need rescue assistance now to save rabbits that are now at risk – We cannot take any more until we have adoptions

Call me at 831 600-7479 or by cell 831 239-7119 if you can help get out even one rabbit.
