Saving Wish
Update: January 10, 2008

Wish has seen the doctor and continues to improve.

Here is the latest report from Wish's foster home:

We just couldn't wait to send this picture of sweet Wish. What a perfect name for her. There is something very special about this mother rabbit. Wish is the best Mother we have ever cared for. Most of our moms are attentive but may only go to their kits at feeding time and an occasion check in. Wish is a wonderful snuggler. She is always with her babies but is never aggressive when you want to pet her or her babies. I think she is the most gentlest and sweetest bunny. The picture shows that she doesn't feel well yet and she is willing to lay with her babies so they feel safe and warm. She is the best Mama to her babies. She is eating well and regaining her strength" She is such a loving rabbit! Wish has a normal pulse rate and she is eating. It seems she is improved every few hours.

In a few days if she continues to improve she can have her leg looked at again. She does seem to have adequate milk for the babies. Tube feeding has not been needed. The babies and Wish improve every day - Wish is so grateful for her food and her clean new foster home. She is one amazing bunny girl! With good food, veterinary care and needed support, we will help Wish heal and give her back some of the love she so generously gives. What a loving bunny. She is still tired, but seems overjoyed to be held and treated with kindness. we have her area soft, warm and perfect so that she can raise her little family in peace.

Wish needs sponsors for her care and for her little ones too. If you can help, please do. She needs a blood panel, xrays and a few vet visits. Her babies seem to be ok for now. All of the babies will need spay/neuter and vet visits at the appropriate time. For now, we need to get Wish into to see the vet and care for her so she can get well and then find her own permanent home. If you wish to sponsor a baby or contribute to Wish's spay, you can donate via Paypal, or donate by check. Wish's bunny family thanks you for your help!

Saving Wish by Auntie Heather

The sign on her shelter card stated only "large brown bunny, sex unknown, STRAY". It had her ID numbers, dates and nothing else. She had been dumped like so many others by a person who had the nerve to say she was a stray! Once at the shelter, this loving rabbit was placed in a kennel along with the other 50 plus rabbits who had been abandoned there. She seemed quieter than the others, eating her food but seeming so sad. She was reported to be very gentle and affectionate, and she is! She also had a leg injury and puncture wounds which meant she would be euthanized without rescue after her mandatory stray period was up. This is the shelter's policy when dealing with injured animals.

Wish was brought to a South Bay shelter early in January. Two days after her arrival, on a very chilly morning she delivered her four sweet children in a cold stainless steel cage. She managed to create the most beautiful nest for them out of her own fur and the shredded newspaper that was in her cage. What else could she do in a 1.5 X 1.5 space? This wonderful , injured, loving mother made a safe, warm nest and huddled them all together.

The shelter advocate, Lily, a special person that watches over rabbits for the shelter, was very concerned and sent us her picture with an appeal for her immediate rescue. Wish was sick, malnourished could barely eat and desperately needed medical care. I took one look at Wish's sweet face, noted her needs, and accepted her into the Haven program. She was gently transported to our Mom and infant site in the Bay area. Soon after her arrival, the foster family said "Wish arrived in very poor condition. She has an injured front leg, pale gums, was covered with fleas, and in obvious respiratory distress". They went on to tell us that she was taken to our vet immediate and was treated for fleas, then given a course of antibiotics, pain meds and eye drops along with special dietary orders. Her system was so depleted that she most likely is anemic. At his point she needed to be stabilized before we could address the issues on her leg which on xray appears to have been broken in a prior injury and has healed in an awkward position.

The medical team began to work to help her survive, with sub Q fluids, antibiotics, hand feeding and technical support. They watched her carefully and had plans in place to tube feed the babies if Wish was unable to survive. She had not eaten anything in so long. Xrays showed her stomach was completley empty! She was given critical care and supplemental feedings, and she responded immediately.

In spite of her initial grave condition and poor prognosis, Wish is improving! She is caring for her kits intensely - she seems much more stable every hour with just a few hours of care. She stays Very close to her snuggle safe and her kits stay close to her. We all have a good feeling about Wish's recovery. Her response to care is excellent. I think she will rally! Help us help wish and family. Each one needs a sponsor.

Please Send get well wishes for Wish and her new family Faith, Hope, Charity and Dreamy
