various rabbit communication issues. We
do matchmaking too!
Rabbit rescue and animal welfare organizations around
the world will be celebrating this important day by giving advice on Bunny
Basics. Bunny Basics includes everything
from exercise, handling, emotional well being, diet and veterinary care.
"There is a great need to educate people about rabbits basic needs,”
explains Heather Bechtel, Director of The Rabbit Haven in Santa Cruz
County. "Many caregivers are not aware that their bunny
needs companionship, toys, supervision, health checks, neutering, and safe
indoor housing. People are usually well meaning but end up neglecting or even
harming their rabbits through lack of information. We hope that as a result of this
education campaign, bunny lovers worldwide will have a better understanding
of their companion rabbit. Every day can be a celebration with
your pet bunny."
Rabbits make wonderful companions
Rabbits are bright, affectionate, inquisitive, gentle, and
playful. Being social creatures, they
enjoy the company of people, rabbits, and other animals. Traditionally, rabbits were kept in a hutch
in the garden, where they tend to be neglected during cold weather or when the
novelty wore off. Nowadays, more and
more people keep their rabbits in the house to protect them from predators and
because it is easier to meet their physical and social needs in this way. With a little training, rabbits can learn to
use a litter box and become a delightful addition to your household. Outdoor rabbits live an average of only 3-5
years. Indoor bunnies that are properly
spayed/neutered often live 10-15 years! Quite a big difference.
Adopt a bunny and save a life!
The Rabbit Haven rescues injured and abandoned rabbits and
accepts surrendered rabbits from the general public or the SPCA in Santa Cruz,
Santa Clara, San Benito and Monterey Counties.
We then work to place these rescued rabbits into loving permanent or
foster homes. The Rabbit Haven also works in the community, at schools, and
with our local SPCA shelter and other education groups to educate the public on
rabbit care, feeding, grooming, medical needs, social requirements and behaviors
The best place to get a rabbit is your local animal shelter
or to visit The Rabbit Haven Adoption Shows in person or online www.therabbithaven.org. The Rabbit Haven serves Santa Cruz, Santa
Clara, San Benito and Monterey Counties.
The Haven can also refer you to a wide network of shelters and rescue
groups like Save-A-Bunny in Marin http://www.saveabunny.com/
or House Rabbit Society in Richmond http://www.rabbit.org/rabbit , to help
you find the perfect new bunny family member. We work with many of the
area shelters.
For details and links, visit our website at www.therabbithaven.org and check out many
beautiful rabbits on the adoption showcase.
We have all shapes and sizes. waiting for a home. Like people,
each rabbit is an individual with her own personality- no breed specific
personality.
Celebrate International Rabbit Day - Add a pet companion
bunny to your family! Adopting or
fostering will save a life.
We welcome the community to come and learn all about the
wonders of rabbits!
